Boqueria Market (cat., Mercat de la Boqueria), also known as Sant Josep, is a city market in Barcelona , Spain, in the sub-district of El Raval, with an entrance from the Rambla street. The building occupies an area of 2,583 m² and is constructed of glass and steel, and is decorated with mosaic.

History

The first mention of the market dates back to 1217, when tables for selling meat were set up near the former city gate of Bokeria. Since December 1470, pigs have been sold here. Then the market was outside the city gates, so that other traders could sell their goods. At that time the market was called Mercat Bornet or (until 1794) Mercat de la Palla (“straw market”).

The open market area was first surrounded by columns and had to be built up, but the market had no official status and was considered just a continuation of the market on Nova Square stretching to Piazza del Pi. Later it was decided to divide the markets, and on the St. Joseph built a fish market with kiosks for butchers and poultry owners.

In 1826, the market was officially recognized by the authorities. March 19, 1840, began construction work under the leadership of architect Mas Vila. The market was opened in the same year, but some improvements were made until 1846. The official opening occurred in 1853. In 1911 a new fish market was opened, and in 1914 the market acquired a new metal roof, which now covers Bokeria.

The Boqueria market is better to visit several times – in the first visit the eyes literally run away from the abundance of products and it will definitely be difficult to choose something. However, even if you are not going to zatarivatsya products of the Spanish “terroir”, on Bokeria it’s still better to come several times – impressions will certainly be abundant!

Bokeria has a culinary school, where it is taught how to cook the outlandish products presented on the market correctly.

And here it is worth wrapping with Rambla to refresh yourself with a glass of freshly squeezed fruit juice for 1 EUR.
