“The Jewish Mountain” – so literally translated the name of this 170-meter high hill, which rises to the south-west of the Old Port. Once there was a Jewish cemetery and, probably, a settlement. Today on Montjuïc there are several of the best museums in Barcelona , the construction of the World Exhibition of 1929 and a complex of Olympic facilities built for the 1992 Olympics, as well as a whole raft of parks, gardens and paths for leisurely walks overlooking Barcelona.
The highest point of Montjuic is marked by the castle of the same name, from the viewing platform of which the city is visible as on the palm of your hand. From the top of the hill you can walk down to the foot, on the way passing through several botanical gardens, the most interesting of which is Jardins de Mossen Costa i Llobera, where a lot of cacti from around the world grow. Among the must-visit on Montjuic are the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Joan Miró Museum, the Spanish Village, the Olympic Stadium and the Magic Fountain.
The road to the hill is an entertainment in itself: in addition to the banal tourist bus climbing to the top, you can get here by cable car from the Old Port (transbordador aeri), whose booths are merrily swinging from the sea winds, or a cable car and another cable car (teleferic) from the foot of Montjuic.
The nearest metro station to Montjuic is Espanya, at the foot of the hill. At the top of the buses number 50, 55, 61 and 193.
