The National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona, founded at the dawn of the nineteenth century, is now recognized as the oldest museum in the whole of Catalonia. In its walls are collected various archaeological finds, discovered in the city and its surroundings in the past one and a half centuries. The foundation of the museum fund is made up of artifacts from the early Christian necropolis and the Roman Amphitheater, and its crown is the ancient mosaic, detailing the deadly head of the Medusa of the Gorgon.
The museum was created by Hernandez Sanauja in 1848, and 112 years later moved to the current building. Expositions are placed on three floors and are represented by various sculptures, gold coins, fragments of ancient mosaics, ceramics, ancient weapons and many details of antique and medieval buildings.
You can get to the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona on city buses running on routes 8 and 21 and passing the Pilats stop.
In addition to the building itself, where a rich collection of various exhibits is exhibited, the museum also owns the Paleochristian Museum and necropolis, the Roman villas Squeyes and Els Munts, as well as a library based in a building on a nearby street. Periodically during the year, temporary exhibitions are held in the museum halls, where items from the museum’s extensive storehouses are being exploded, and scientific and educational films are shown. In addition, the museum very often hosts master classes for visitors of all ages.
