The local administration intends to strengthen the economy of the region with the help of farm products and new tourist offers.
Montserrat as a tourist object is world famous and incredibly popular. But tourists, having arrived here and having visited the main sights – a monastery and other picturesque corners, usually leave, for a long time without delaying. The local authorities decided to direct their efforts to the economic development of the region, calling this plan the “Montserrat Village Park”. The main goal is to support the production in both the primary sector and in the service sector, on 40,000 hectares of this rich land. “Meat, goat and sheep’s milk are produced here, and now cheese and mato will be produced,” said Sonia Kallau, one of the initiators of the project.
Wine is another important element of the new course: on the slopes of the Montserrat range there are a large number of vineyards. In addition, the region will focus on the production of olive oil, since high quality olives are grown here.
The economic growth of the region should attract even more tourists, the administration hopes. Montserrat should also declare itself as an area suitable for education in the field of the environment.
